BMI (body mass index) is the person's body weight (in kilograms) divided by the square of his height (in meters) and measured in kg/m2. There is a need to use corrective coefficient In order to calculate the index in imperial units. BMI is used to estimate a normal body weight (a healthy body weight) based on a person's height. It's also called Quetelet index, is a measurement which estimates a proportion of person's weight and height. Body mass index is often used as diagnostic index to identify if individual is obese, overweight, normal or underweight. BMI was invented by Adolphe Quetelet (a Belgian scientist) between years 1830 and 1850. |
